This is an excellent specimen of a fully agatized fossil coral colony. It comes from the Withlacoochee River of northern Florida. The inside surface where the living coral resided has been transformed to white boytroidal forms within several open chambers. A section of the surface is a rich rust orange. Where there has been fracturing, there are intense fine lines of deep red surrounding the white. The back side surface deceives by its ordinary fossil appearance. But what happened on the inside 38 million years ago (the Oligocene Period) is amazing. No polishing was needed to enhance this fossils features. It is beautiful in its natural state. This is a display level specimen and an acrylic stand is included.
