This is an excellent specimen of a fully agatized fossil coral colony. It comes from the Withlacoochee River of northern Florida. The inside surface where the living coral resided has been transformed to butterscotch chalcedony with splashes of white and spots of blue/gray. The outside surface deceives by its ordinary fossil appearance. But what happened on the inside 38 million years ago (the Oligocene Period) is amazing. No polishing was needed to enhance this fossils features. It is beautiful in its natural form. This display level specimen is covered in soft botryoidal lumps throughout.
