This beautiful gourd sized artwork was hand formed by esteemed Craftsman Señor Roberto Bañuelos. Señor Bañuelos has been known for years in the village of Mata Ortiz. I have heard of his work, but this was the first opportunity for me to obtain it, and unfortunately this may be the only one. Apparently the gentleman is well into his senor years and his ability to create appears to be fading. Once he stops, it will be the sad end to an era of supreme artistry.
This pottery has three nicely defined fish swimming around it. The use of color and shape to create these is wonderful. The mouth is surrounded by a compass-like design. Shades of earthen red and soft sky blue integrate with other designs and shape which together harmonize into a circle of beauty. The overall yellow glazing is dotted with microscopic red splashes. The Artist took a brush and with his finger flipped back the bristles so they would produce this effect.
Each and every part of this creature was hand fashioned and fired in an outdoor, homemade oven.
This pottery is small, delicate and special.
