This pottery has been created by Señor Octavio Silveira. His work is instantly recognized. He specializes in creating images by etching through the glaze to the underlying white clay. In this pot, the glaze is a beautiful red and green and black, and the native wildlife of choice is the dragonfly. The pottery has five active dragonflies filling their sky, as well as parallel circles of alternating green and brick red strips. The strips are packed with polygon and circle shapes taken right from the designs of Señor Silveira's ancestors, the Paquime of the Casas Grandes region an entire 1000 years ago. The lower half is deep etching (sgraffito) into the native white clay.
Overwhelmingly and uniquely Chihuahua Desert in design, the pottery is the shape of native gourds which line the streets and surrounding countryside of the village of Mata Ortiz. The entire piece is of the highest quality put out by the village potters with no cracks from shrinkage or inadequate firing. The time and detail needed to create this perfect form of folk art is extensive and immense.
Señor Silveira signs his pottery on the underside.
A pottery ring is included.
