This is a large, striking black Mata Ortiz pot by premier artisan Berenice Cota. She is known for her ability to create larger pottery with contrasting glossy and matte finishes combined to create wondrous works of art. Her work is very uncommon today. The design is simple and elegant. The pot is devided in two areas - the top and the bottom. On the upper side four separate round windows appear. Each represents Mother Earth and the four cardinal directions. In each window is the sacred tortoise acting as guardian of the sky and the heavens, as well as the protective cover of the Good Earth below.
The underside has a strongly textured 'tick' pattern represent Mother Earth. An ancient and traditional design of leaning blocks encircle the entire circumference, accented beneath with a stepped pattern. The textures and designs are all an homage to the Artists ancestors, the Paquime Culture of the Casas Grandes Region from 1000 years in the past. This Mata Ortiz is modern Chihuahua culture married with the ancient spirit of the region.
For anyone who has yearned for at least one piece of artwork for their home, but shy away from the prohibitive costs, this is the perfect opportunity to get an authentic and true piece of Latin American Folk Art at an amazing price.
Berenice's signature is on the underside.
