Since the revival of the Mata Ortiz Pottery movement beginning in the 1970's, second, and even third generation artisans are coming forward. These newer generations are bringing with them the traditions of the parents and their ancestors going back a thousand years. They are also adding their own contemporary and fresh interpretations of a ancestral art forms.
This is the case with the Mata Ortiz created by Señor Ivan Marin. This is folk art the size of the native gourds which grow in this region of Chihuahua. Fashioned and glazed with the same materials used by his ancestors, Señor Marin employs similar tools and the same firing methods. He also injects his own individual style. In this piece the Artist has used native black clay. On this he creates intricate and interwoven designs by contrasting glossy glaze and a matte finish. The glossy is mirror-like and the overall effect is stunning beauty in simple elegance.
With proper care this piece will endure for generations as well.
