This beautiful pumpkin sized pot is a creation of Ms. Belinda Poncé. Her style is immediately recognizable for those who have been fortunate to run across her rare works. When using white clay to build these art forms, multi colors of glaze are applied to it and etched down to the underlying white, creating wonderful sharp edges and pronounced details. As with most creations coming out of Mata Ortiz, this pottery has strongly been influenced from the villagers ancient ancestors.
Native wildlife is one of Belinda's great loves to recreate on clay. This pottery has many strongly angled lizards scurrying around. The areas of black glaze filling the space in between the lizards feature traditional Paquime designs from a thousand years in the past. The entire pottery is filled with ancient imagery with Ms. Poncés added touch of modernism.
