This beautiful egg shaped pottery is a creation of Señor Humberto Piña. His style is is easy to recognize. When using white clay to build these art forms, glaze is applied to it and etched down to the underlying white, creating wonderful sharp edges and pronounced detail, as in this piece. As with most creations coming out of Mata Ortiz, this pottery has strongly been influenced from the villagers ancient ancestors.
Native wildlife is Señor Piña's favorite imagery. This pottery has 3 well formed roadrunners strongly angled and in motion. The areas filling the space in between the birds feature traditional Paquime designs from a thousand years in the past. The opening has a wonderful overlapping green 'feather' pattern which encircles it. The thin green circle stands out in the black and red and white desert hues. The entire pottery is filled with ancient imagery with Señor Peñas added touch of modernism. This is an example of a wonderful thing coming in a small size.
