Señor Hilario Quezada Jr. is the creator of this piece of Mata Ortiz magic. Señor Quezadas organic skills are exhibited in his creation of wildlife imagery. This piece is the size and shape of the native gourds which grow in the area. The glaze is a dark charcoal against a natural white clay from the surrounding foothills soil. Señor Quezada Jr. etches away the top layer of glaze to create the imagery of abundant plant and animal life. The method is 'sgraffito', a time honored technique going back a thousand years in the New World. Committed time and skill was put into creating this one of a kind pottery. Here Señor Quezada Jr's talents are front and center.
The scene is from a borderland area of desert and forest. There are blooming agave, native cardon, prickly pear and yucca. Big Horn Sheep pose proudly while doves, hawks, owls, snakes, and ringtail go about their business.
Señor Quezadas creations are formed from materials retrieved from the natural resources provided by the surrounding environment. The design is of his own creation merged with the traditional style of his ancestors.
