Contemporary Mata Ortiz first began as an homage, or copy, of what the villagers ancestors created one thousand years ago. Nearly half a century on from the revival, what was a continuation of ancient Paquime Culture has evolved into Latin Americas very finest ceramic folk art.
The piece possesses Señor Ortiz’s unique style. There are bold, complex, and contrasting diamonds of rich blue glaze and white. These are painted on a black glaze surface for the most dramatic contrast, and are paradoxical to the simple and smooth roundness of the container. Viewed from the top or from the sides, every angle is a kaleidoscope of southwestern form; every angle is Señor Ernesto Ramirez Silva. The piece comes with a pottery ring and is signed on the bottom.
