Señor Che Pedregón is a third generation member of potters descended from the father of the Mata Ortiz movement, Señor Juan Quezada. Now well into his 20’s, his inherited talent is in full gear. This pottery is made from the white clay located in the nearby Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains. Young Señor Pedregóns designs flow in smooth fluid motion, gracefully and smoothly curving around the surface of the piece. He does a wonderful job at combining ancestral designs with contemporary images, as with these hummingbirds. Three circles exhibit three hummingbirds with each in mid-flight. The spaces in between and above are filled with designs and shapes dating back to the communities ancestors a millennium ago. The Maestro of this pottery has even added triangular black finishing lines under the hummers. The tight geometric shapes intertwined with the free style softness of the birds completely brings together the ancient with the modern of the Mata Ortiz culture.
All the artists of Mata Ortiz create breathtaking pottery of superb quality. I find the finest of the superb through detailed examination and testing to assure they last for generations.
