Señor Tomas Quintana - Sculptor
Height - 4 inches - tail
Length - 9 inches
Weight - 2 Pounds
Width - 6 inches - body
This is the first Horned Toad to come out of the village of Mata Ortiz. This pottery sculpture has been created by Señor Tomas Quintana. Tomas is regarded at the highest levels for his realistic and symbolic representations of the wildlife of Chihuahua. This exhibits wonderful details of the feet and horns. The symbolic aspect arises from the use of traditional designs first implemented by his ancestors 1000 years ago. The repeating geometric and triangular patterns are culturally typical as are the checkerboard patterns and parallel lines. The fine details of hand glazing are incredible and eye bending. The horns of the head are finely crafted as is every other area of this lizard. The hole on the tip of the tail is there for the firing process, keeping the figure from exploding.
Señor Quintana has signed the underside.
