Señor Eduardo Chevo Ortiz Jr. is a true genius in the art of working in black clay.
The clay is pulled from the Good Earth surrounding the village of Mata Ortiz. Señor Ortiz fires the clay until it becomes a hard ceramic using outdoor wood ovens. Then the real magic and the intense work begins. Through determination and dedication, and intense skill earned over a lifetime, this potter creates mesmerizing patterns. These patterns date back 1000 years ago to his ancestors of the Paquime culture. By creating both matte finishes and gloss finishes of the black ceramic, minute details, nearly unimaginable, come to life. The entire pottery comes alive.
The penultimate design point is the mushroom shaped opening. This representation is rarely found in Mata Ortiz designs. This is odd as it is very popular. The design mimics the doorways found in many ruins of the Casas Grandes region. The conical top is a wonderful juxtaposition to the wide, rounded bottom. All these elements combined are quite uncommon to find, and demonstrate the richness of Señor Ortiz Jr.s creative mind.
Señor Eduardo Chevo Ortiz Jr. signs his work on the bottom.
This artwork comes with a pottery ring.
