Artist Derek Quezada is an teen aged, up and coming artist, born and raised in the artist colony of Mata Ortiz!. Depictions of life in Chihuahua are wonderfully illustrated through bold outlines and fine detail. His unique eye and individualistic interpretations have created this wonderful pottery.
This is the first Mata Ortiz of his creation I have had to offer. The walls are thick and durable. The glaze of this pottery is superior. The black surface is perfect for etching through to the underlying white clay. He has a cowboy on his horse, cactus, birds and mammals.
The firing is longer in duration to assure strong ceramic for this investment in art. I only deal in the finest level of pottery provided by the villagers of Mata Ortiz.
Along with the clay, all the materials and glazes used are from the finest of elements in the Good Earth, native to the countryside surrounding the village of Mata Ortiz.

In the 1970s, a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he came across. He used the same clay sand mixtures made from materials found in the area where the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later, much of the village of Mata Ortiz has adopted these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing their sense of beauty. The designs are bold, earthy, and individualistic.
Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. These creations are truly unique transformations that can only be made by this small village from its soil.
