This lovely pottery by Artist Mirna Hernandez is an homage to her ancestors from a millennium ago. The earthen tones of black and brick red are painted on top of a desert sand beige. The shapes are vivid and sharp and defined. The vase slopes to a graceful, turned lip at the mouth. There are circle sashes of intersecting lines teeming with imagery. No middle ground is allowed by this artist. Duplicating shapes are typical of the thousand year old Paquime tradition, as well as traditional geometric shapes such as triangles and blocks. The people of Mata Ortiz know their heritage and ancestry and proudly carry it forward through their pottery. And more often now, these artisans are adding their contemporary interpretations to the art form.
Artist Hernandez signs her work on the bottom.
