Artist Jorge Rodriguez Guillen is the potter who has created this abundance of pottery. This piece is created in the shape of native gourds which grow wild along the streets of the village of Mata Ortiz. Situated in the ancient Casas Grandes region in the heart of Chihuahua, Mexico, the village has been the epicenter of an art revival originally begun by the Paquime ancestors of a thousand years ago.
Señor Guillens work is rare to come by. He only produces so many pieces every so often, and they are immediately obtained by watchful enthusiasts.
The motif is wonderful. The most notable features are the cacti and the hummingbirds. There are rodents happily climbing about the plants, and there are woodpeckers peaking out from behind. The southwestern white glaze is a perfect canvas for bringing out the vivid green. There is an intricate puzzle piece like pattern on the white which enhances, without distracting. The centerpiece of this folk art has to be the accompanying lid. Fashioned on it is an armed cactus with a bird perched on it. Even the underside where the Sculptors signature is found on this Mata Ortiz Pottery Matching Cactus Lid, the birds and rodents have been included.
This pottery is not made to hold water.
