Ms. Saira Nuñez is one of the several up and coming potter from the artist colony of Mata Ortiz. This pottery by her is a marvel in etching skills. This Mata Ortiz is hand formed from local white clay. Shades of green and dark gray glaze are utilized across the entire surface. Ms. Nuñez has masterfully etched 8 wonderful tortoises. Each has a Paquimé pinwheel spinning in the center of its shell. The in between space is a sea of free form shapes filling any voids. There rings around the neck of this pottery are tied in with the pinwheels with their Paquimé influence. This up an coming group of new potters, from the artist colony in Chihuahua, are the future masters of bringing a contemporary appeal to their creations as they maintain their ancestors styles.
