Señor Octavio Silveira is from the well-known Silveira family in Mata Ortiz and he is the creator of this fine pottery. His specialty is the white clay he harvests from the surrounding foothills of his village. This piece is hand coiled, a tradition going a thousand years back in time. Señor Silveira is highly skilled in the deep etching process called Sgafritto and is famous for the cross hatch patterns created by this. The glazed images are glass-like in appearance and touch. A multitude of hummingbirds suspend in midair while feeding from the nectar of the flowers. The flowers are bursting from the underside of the piece. The sense of movement and life is intensified by the bold gold outlines which surround the red which surrounds the ebony black. Etched white lines add to the sense of life in the entire piece.
This pottery is a testament to ancient traditions and contemporary styles. A thousand years of tradition is encompassed in this one pottery.
Señor Silveira signs his works on the bottom.
