The Mexican holiday of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated throughout Mexico. November 1st is a wonderful time to visit this nation and marvel at the respect and splendor descendants how to their beloved, deceased ancestors in community cemeteries. It’s a day for the living family and friends to renew their respect and love for their deceased by gathering to pray for and remember them, and participate in their spiritual pilgrimage.

Ms. Diana Loya is one of the up and coming masters of depicting this holiday in pottery. She has transformed images of the dead into those of living souls, where they experience what we, the living, love. As with all of Ms. Loya's pieces, this pottery is full of imagery. There are dancers, musicians, and finely dressed young lovers. The landscape is filled with all types of plants and animals indigenous to the Mexican environment.

The trees are bare, and it's clear that it's early winter, with birds flying to and fro. Every image is a parade of activity and life. As an homage to her fellow artisans, Ms. Loya has placed the names of deceased residents of Mata Ortiz on the headstones. Descanse en Paz (Rest in Peace) engravings, and DEP (Rest in Peace), demonstrate the strength of affection and reverence by our Latin cousins toward their deceased loved ones.
As a final effect of her artistic abilities, Ms, Loya masterfully utilizes the style of sgraffito etching, a design method going back thousands of years. This method demands a significant commitment to time and is very difficult to achieve, especially on the scale of this pottery.
The price of this art is based on the dozens of hours and the accumulated years of skill from which this masterpiece was created.
