Señor Lazaro Ozuna Silveira - Artist
This wedding vessel has the desert yellow glaze rarely found coming out of the village of Mata Ortiz. ‘Married’ with the brilliant white glaze and rich dark brown & brick red glazes, all the colors are fully maximized. Señor Lazaro Ozuna Silveira has hand formed this from a lump of native white clay into a masterpiece.
Deep etched lines known as Sgraffito outline the two prominent pinwheels bisecting the pottery. Four arms sweep in a galactic motion for each of the wheels. Their interiors and the rest of the designs are a modern interpretation of patterns originated by the ancestors of a thousand years ago.
All the materials and tools used in creating this double spouted vase are pulled from the natural resources of the surrounding countryside. The methods of creation and firing in outdoor stoves replicate the traditions of the ancient Paquime Culture.

The use of these double spout vessels carries over into numerous southwestern cultures. Their ceremonial use in pre-marriage traditions and marriage rites is significant and too involved to describe here. Suffice it to say one spout is for the groom and one spout is for the bride.
But please, never drink from this and only carry from the sides using both hands. Do this and this folk art will last for generations.

Señor Silveira signs his work on the bottom.
A pottery ring is included.
