Señor Oscar Quezada - Artist
Width - 5.75 inches
Height - 9 inches
Weight - 1 pound 9 ounces
Mr. Oscar G. Quezada is a master of many different forms and styles in Mata Ortiz pottery. Black clay, such as here, is one of them. This Owl Figurine is created through the coil method. Oscar take one coil of clay and lays it on top of a previous layer, then he works them together to construct walls and sides and heads and anything else. From this ribbed beginning comes the smoothest wonderful works of art.
When working in the native black clay using sophisticated and highly skilled methods, the gloss black and matte black surfaces work together to form intricate and wonderful patterns. The designs here are heavily influenced by Señor Quezadas ancestors from the Paquime culture 1000 years ago.
The owls face and ear tuffs are hand formed. The face is alert and bright, and the round squat body symbolizes prosperity.
Señor Quezada signs his work.
A pottery ring is included.
