Ms. Berenice Cota is perhaps one of the most sought after potters from the artist colony of Mata Ortiz in the heart of Chihuahua, Mexico. This pottery I'm making available is a clear example why. The ability to create intricate designs of intense complexity is very difficult and extremely time consuming. To do so through the combination of both a glossy finish and matte finish raises these skills to the highest level.
Ms. Cota has created a large art form out of native materials collected from the countryside surrounding Mata Ortiz. She has hand formed - through the coil method - a wide and low profile work of art encompassed in designs originated by her Paquime ancestors 1000 years ago. Minute squares combine to form larger diamond shapes. These combine to produce a skin of pure beauty. Focusing on the sacred number 3, that is how many sashes wrap across the piece. They join at the mouth and complete in squared ends to develop a bladed opening, further creating complexity through simple elegance and contradictory shapes.
The lower waste has not been overlooked. A wide band of textured, corrugated marks are there. Below that band is another band which in design and placement compliments the upper three band. And as a final touch, a circular pattern on the lowest half pays homage to the bladed mouth.
