Artist Manuel Rodriguez Guillen is the master potter who has created this abundant, handmade Mata Ortiz Pottery. This piece is made in the shape of native gourds, which grow wild along the streets of the village of Mata Ortiz. It is situated in the ancient Casas Grandes region in the heart of Chihuahua, Mexico. The village has been the epicenter of an art revival that originated with the Paquime ancestors for over a thousand years ago.
Señor Guillen's work is rare to come by. He only produces a limited number of pieces periodically, and they are immediately claimed by watchful enthusiasts.
The overabundance of fish is apparent. With the colors of the rainbow represented, the detail is awe-inspiring. Even the underside of this handmade Mata Ortiz Pottery, where the sculptor's signature is found, includes the fish shape.
The crown, of course, is the large, solitary, sculpted fish at the top. Designs and color choices are a strong homage to Señor Guillen's ancestors, who originated the art form. Earth-toned shades of glaze and the shape and structure of the fish represent the ancient culture.
