Artist Manuel Rodriguez Guillen is the potter who has created this over abundant pottery. This piece is created in the shape of native gourds which grow wild along the streets of the village of Mata Ortiz. Situated in the ancient Casas Grandes region in the heart of Chihuahua, Mexico, the village has been the epicenter of an art revival originally begun by the Paquime ancestors of a thousand years ago.
Señor Guillens work is rare to come by. He only produces so many pieces every so often, and they are immediately obtained by watchful enthusiasts.
The over abundance of fishes is obvious. With the colors of the rainbow represented by this large numbered school, the detail is awe inspiring. Even the underside where the Sculptors signature is found, the shape of a fish has been included.
The crown is, of course, the large solitary sculpted fish on the top. Designs and color choices are a strong homage to Señor Guillens ancestors who originated the art form. Earth toned shades of glaze and the shape and structure of the fish all speak to the ancient culture.
Señor Guillen signs his artwork.
