This is one of the more intricate 3-D rendering pieces of pottery to enter my store, and one of the more delicate. Five different distinguished heads pop out from the upper half of this piece. Each head is attached to a body painted on the surface. Then there is a group of many tortoises swimming on the bottom half, all hand painted.
This is a seed pot, called that as the opening is big enough to store seed but small enough to safely keep the seed from rodents.
Displaying of this Efren Ledezma Mexican Mata Ortiz Pottery should be done where there is little to no activity of pets, children, etc.. Maybe in a glass case or sturdy shelf. Señor Efren Ledezma has painstakingly formed this pottery of life and action from inert clay. He has glazed it in ebony black with wonderfully contrasting white background.
This piece is signed on the underside.
