Welcome to my store!
This pottery has been created by Señor Tomas Quintana. Tomas is regarded in the highest levels for his realistic and symbolic representations of the wildlife of Chihuahua. This is a Racoon in a crouching stance. The symbolic aspect arises from the use of traditional designs first implemented by his ancestors 1000 years ago. The arrow points along the tail and, the parallel labyrinthine lines, and checkered patterns are all an homage from a descendant to his great grandparents many times removed.
The realism is wonderfully portrayed in the lifelike texture of the fur, face, ears and everywhere else. The piece is full and heavy and unique to the artist colony of Mata Ortiz. There are intentional holes in the ears and the end of the tail that assist in the successful firing of the clay.
This racoon is new and is the first of its kind that I've seen. Señor Quintana has signed the underside of the chin.
