This Mata Ortiz pottery is new. It was hand created by Señor Eli Ortiz of the village of Mata Ortiz. Señor Ortiz stands alone in his style and design. A master in working native black clay, his art is both traditional and intensive.
The pottery is covered in images of the Paquime, his ancestors of a thousand years ago. Using both a matte and shined finish together is what reveals these elaborate patterns. There are crosses and stylized feathers and abstract patterns.
This pottery is four sided with rounded faces. The wide fluted opening tops off the community of designs. One of Señor Ortiz's trademarks is in this piece; his ability to hide his signature in the most unlikely of places.
Señor Ortiz is one of the most sought after artists in the specialty of black clay creations.
Some of his pieces may look similar from a distance, but on close inspection they are unique and one-of-a-kind.
